LAKOTA STAR QUILTS
- One of the groups supported by the International Anglican Fellowship (IAF) is
the Sun Star Anglican Church of the Lakota
Sioux, located on the Pine Ridge Reservation near Kyle, South Dakota, in the poorest
county in the United States. Unemployment on the reservation is between 80% and 90% of the
eligible work force. The average life expectancy is only 45 years. More than 30% of the
homes have neither electricity nor indoor plumbing.
-
- The Lakota Sioux are known for their "Star Quilts." The IAF has
several of these quilts available for purchase, with the money going to benefit these
truly needy people. Star quilts make beautiful gifts, or they can be auctioned as a
fund-raiser for churches or schools. They are all designed and sewn on the reservation.
Some are hand stitched, and some are sewn by old treadle-operated machines, but all are
unique and authentic. Above and below are examples of some of
the designs available.
-
- These quilts are a part of Americana, and the art of making them is fading
quickly. We hope to rekindle interest in this vanishing art among the younger
generation by demonstrating its value as a way to generate needed funds.
-
- The average price of a full-sized quilt is about $250. Smaller ones can be used
for throws or as crib quilts. Colored photos can be sent to assist in the selection
process. All prices include shipping, which is paid for by the IAF. 100% of the sale
proceeds go back to the Lakota Sioux.
-
- If you do not need a quilt, a tax exempt donation to the IAF, designated for the
Lakota Sioux, would be greatly appreciated.
